7 Tips to Help You Get Promoted (Only If You Want More Money)

Get PromotedYou might as well admit it, you want to get promoted and you want to make more money.  Most people don’t launch a career with the idea of staying in the same spot for the next 30 years.

This is you isn’t it? (It’s ok to admit this to yourself privately if you need to)

Tip #1 – Know what it takes to get to the next level up.  If you don’t know, ask.  Ask your boss.  Ask the person who is doing that job.  Ask the bigger boss.  Once you know, you know what to develop.

Tip #2 – Don’t lose site of performing your current job.  You have a job and you need to perform it well if not out-perform the expectations of your job.  Some people focus on doing things to get promoted, they forget to execute flawlessly in their job.  Not good.

Tip #3 – Get a mentor.  It’s like recruiting your new BFF.  By having a person who is at a higher level than you, but not your boss, will be like having an “inside” track.  They can give you their observation of how well you’re doing and give advice on navigating the political landscape.

Tip #4 – Don’t forget to drain the swamp.  When the alligators are circling, it’s easy to forget you were going to drain the swamp.  It’s also easy to let circumstances simply sweep you up to the point you have forgot about moving up.

Tip #5 – Recognize what you’ve accomplished.  Promotions are not “one big step”.  Getting there is a series of small steps you take along the way.  Granted, when you get promoted, it feels like one big step, at least to your paycheck.  Make sure you recognize what you’ve accomplished.  It will make you feel great about all you’ve done and are a great thing to share with your boss.

Tip #6 – Learn to be indispensable to the boss.  Listen and pay attention to what is important to your boss.  Support them in their tough job as much as possible.  Deliver the things that are important to them and in the process, you will become a seriously valuable player.

Tip #7 – Know where you’re headed.  Clarity, or the lack of it, is the biggest obstacle for any type of career growth and promotion.  If you don’t know where you’re headed, you’re already there.

Bonus Tip – Set your expectations to how your company behaves.  All too often we get impatient for promotions to happen.  Look around you for how frequent and when promotions are given.  Make sure your expectations match those so you know how long the race will most likely be.
