If you are running your job search right, you are going out to networking events on a regular basis. And you probably come home with a big pile of business cards.
The old way of following up is to send them an email telling them how great it was to meet them. Then if it’s an “A” contact, you’ll probably try to get an 1:1 meeting.
The social media way of following up is to find them on LinkedIn, and then personalize your invitation to connect. This way, you are both following up with the requisite thank-you, and expanding your social media network. Now it will be easier for you to remember these people in the future, track any updates with their employment and open up even more 2nd and 3rd degree connections.
