You are a great job candidate, and you have a job interview with a financial firm in Boston. You walk into the interview. Here are things that you, a job candidate, would never do.
• You would never brag about being late for work.
• You would never show the hiring manager pictures of your night out with friends.
• You would never refer them to anyone but your best references.
Easy enough, right? Unfortunately, poor social media habits sometimes strip job candidates of their common sense.
There is No Privacy on the Internet
People need to understand that you can find anything that’s been on the web. Nothing is private, and employers use that to their advantage. If they are willing to invest time and money hiring and training you, then they are going to invest a few minutes tracking you down on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.
• Did you tweet about being late for work? Letting a future employer know that you are tardy and fine with it is a bad idea.
• Are there embarrassing pictures of you publicly posted on Facebook? Some employers might question your judgment and maturity.
• Have a mediocre recommendation on LinkedIn? That’s not a great showcase of your talent.
Some of these issues may seem like no big deal, but it’s the little things in hiring. In a tough economy, many employers don’t want to take chances. Don’t give them a reason to pass you by for someone seemingly safer.
I love LinkedIn. I have a great network, and it’s growing all the time. As a recruiter, I use it to connect great candidates with challenging and rewarding jobs. Also, I watch technology and high level accounting and finance professionals leverage their networks to find great positions. Unfortunately, these social media success stories march hand-in-hand with job candidates who leave themselves vulnerable based on their social media profiles. Don’t let something small keep you from landing a big opportunity. Exercise the same judgment and maturity online as you do in real life.
