Business Tactics for Professionals to Achieve True “Differentiation”

Interviews may be known for stamping a candidate’s worthiness for a job. However, what happens after you get the position is just as important. Like an actor going on an audition, it is important to know who you are, play up your strengths, disguise your weaknesses and act the part. Here are some tips to help you stand out throughout the course of your career path.

Starting Off

For anyone seeking a new job, it starts with selling yourself during and after the interview process. Self-promotion is a key in being noticed. Like any celebrities prepares to have her photo taken, your “snapshot” is your first, and then lasting, impression on the potential employer. Wisely use this time to step out from the crowd and be noticed.

  1. Sell Yourself
    Market yourself as a brand, one promoted consistently through a cover letter, resume, interview, Linked-In profile and every other form of communication with “frolleagues” (friends and colleagues).
  2. Be genuine
    Show your true self by maintaining a relaxed, comfortable and likeable demeanor. All these are endearing qualities to corporate decision makers.
  3. Prioritize Weekly Goals
    Have a realistic game plan and stick to it. For example, it is much more effective to focus energy on eight quality opportunities than twenty-five non-meticulously followed.
  4. Offer an Analysis
    Research a current or prospective problem of the company and give a detailed, personal perspective. Throwing, not pushing, an idea can help with landing the interview as well cementing your status as the “right candidate”. This will impress the company with your confidence, even if they are not completely comfortable with the idea.
  5. Accelerate Key Relationships
    Put in extra effort to network with professionals in similar fields, meeting with them in places with a relaxed setting (i.e. Starbucks, Diners) to maintain a friendly yet business oriented relationship.

Staying in the Spotlight

Even though the current economy is not as favorable, promotions are still possible. By proving efficiency and competency, decision makers take note and are more likely to move you up the corporate ladder.

  1. Be Consistent
    Consistency in the workplace, through behavior and performance, “brands” the employee. Someone who shows up on time and ready to work, generates ideas, exerts positive influence on co-workers, and performs their job function well.
  2. Strive for Excellence
    Do not just tackle projects to finish them, finish them with flying colors. Exert your all, recognizing the common imperfections and minimizing the impact.
  3. Optimize Communication
    Communication is never one sided, always work hard to be a good listener and conversationalist no matter what level of personnel you’re dealing with. Keep insecurities and fear of judgment at bay.
  4. Stand out as Manager Material
    Stay away from office politics and maintain healthy relationships with others, showing you are comfortable and confident with the levels above you.

These tips may seem basic but they are easily taken for granted. Following these steps will lead to preparedness and eventually success. Like the actor who dresses the role during audition, you too will get the part.
